“The LTTE is a formidable foe. Although no longer operating from Jaffna but from dry jungles south of the Peninsula, it succeeded in July 1996, for instance, to overrun an army campy at Mullaitivu, some 175 miles north-west from Colombo (but close to Jaffna), killing an estimated 1,400 soldiers during a ten-day battle.” From Civil War to Civil Struggle, Peter Kloos.
