The ruling UPFA coalition sign an agreement with the TMVP (formerly the Karuna Faction – now known as the Pillaiyan Faction) to contest the local government elections in the Eastern Province together.

    “The EPDP still has arms and so do a few other political groups. If they completely disarm then we will also disarm…Our political outfit operates separately from our military unit. We will not use arms when contesting the polls. We will contest it democratically”, TMVP spokesman Azad Maulana, responding to the concerns raised by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that historically the TMVP would be the first armed outfit to be registered as a political party.
