Leader of the breakaway ‘Karuna faction’, Vinayagamoorthi Muralidaran, alias ‘Colonel Karuna’ is “nominated” as a Member of Parliament from the quota of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Karuna will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of H.M. Wasantha Samarasinghe of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). In response the the appointment, the JVP filed a Fundamental Rights petition, calling the appointment “immoral”.
