Colombo District United National Party (UNP) legislator T. Maheswaran is shot dead at a Hindu temple in the suburbs of Colombo.
A suspected LTTE female cadre blows herself up near the Colombo office of Douglas Devananda, the Tamil minister for social welfare, killing his personal secretary. On the same day, a bomb exploded near the entrance to a popular department store in a Nugegoda, a busy suburb of Colombo.
Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Natarajah Raviraj and his bodyguard are shot dead in Colombo.
Joseph Pararajasingham, TNA parliamentarian, is assassinated while attending mass.
Kumar Ponnambalam, Tamil parliamentarian and President of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress, is assassinated.
Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Tamil constitutional lawyer and parliamentary member of the TULF, is assassinated by a suicide bomber in Colombo. The attack is blamed on the LTTE.
A bomb blast at the Municipal Council kills Pon Sivapalan, who took over as mayor of Jaffna after the death of Mrs Yogeshwaran. Some of Jaffna top military leaders were killed along with him.
Sarojini Yogeshwaran, the first female mayor of Jaffna, is assassinated by suspected LTTE gunmen.
Tamil parliamentarian A. Thangathurai is assassinated in Trincomalee along with five others during a school event.
LTTE gunmen assassinate TULF leader A. Amirthalingam and former TULF MP, Yogeswaran.
Former TULF MPs, V. Dharmalingam and A. Alalasundaram, are assassinated by the LTTE.
Assassination of Jaffna mayor Alfred Duriappah. Four youths, including Velupillai Prabhakaran, claim responsibility.
The UNP attempts to reverse nationalistic measure. The agreement is signed between Dudley Senanayake and S.J.V. Chelvanayakam, pledging to make Tamil the language of administration and courts in the North East, establish District Councils and give priority to Tamils when granting land in resettlement schemes in the North East.
An emergency is declared by the Governor-General. Federal Party leaders are later detained.
