Britain announces a freeze on aid to Sri Lanka of about US$3 million that it had earlier pledged to help Sri Lanka pay its debts to the World Bank, citing concerns over deteriorating human rights. Britain later (24 May) announces the approval of US$1.9 million to help tens of thousands of people displaced by the recent fighting, calling for a halt to the violence.
